These routes allow you to explore some of the most beautiful and historic landmarks in the U.S.A. for truly memorable experiences. Along the way you’ll pass through National Parks, historic sites, and famous American cities. 

1. Historic Route 66 

One of the countries most famous and important roadways, Historic Route 66 is the birthplace of the American road trip! While the original US 66 was decommissioned in 1985, more than 80% of the original route can still be driven today. It takes road trippers from Chicago to Los Angles and passes through parts of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Stop and see some of Americas most beautiful, historic, and unique roadside attractions that earned Route 66 its legend and mystic. From its vintage diners and motels to the breathtaking views of the Painted Desert, US 66 has something to offer every traveler and explorer. 

2. Border-to-Border Highway: US 93

Spanning from the Arizona to the Canadian boarder, US 93 lets you experience the beauty of the American southwest desert and the serenity of the northern mountains. You'll pass through famous spots like Joshua Tree, Las Vegas, E.T. Highway, and Twin Falls. It’s a diverse span of landscapes full of adventures for any ambitious road tripper. 


There are also a few detours along the way that will take you to some of the wests best National Parks. Stop to see the geysers and waterfalls at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming or the beautiful and panoramic vistas of Montana’s Glacier National Park

3. Interstate 80

If you’re looking for a road trip that spans the entire country from coast to coast, Interstate 80 stretches from San Francisco, California all the way to Teaneck, New Jersey. It’s 2,900 miles of endless places to stop and see along your way. You can take short side trips to major cities like Chicago, Cleveland, and New York City. 


Part of the highway follows the historic Oregon Trail in Wyoming and Nebraska. The trail was once a large-wheeled wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. Along this part of the highway, you’ll pass through towns originally established to serve travelers and emigrants who once used the trail. 

Some other stops you can make along I-80 are Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake, and Niagara Falls. With an interstate that spans the entire country, the number of unique and interesting places to visit definitely makes it a road trip you can take more than once. 

4. The Great River Road

This over 3,000 mile journey through 10 states will take you along the entire length of Americas famous mighty Mississippi River. Running from northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico in southern Louisiana, this scenic byway takes you through the heartland of the US. You’ll pass by waterfront towns on a network of state, federal, and local roads marked by white signs featuring a green pilot’s wheel. 


The route contains some of the midwest’s most iconic cities including Minneapolis-St. Paul, St. Louis, and Memphis. See the famed 630-foot Gateway Arch in Missouri, stop in for some of the countries best BBQ in Tennessee, or experience the music and culture of New Orleans. There’s something for everybody on this route and an incredible diversity of landscapes and history to discover along the way. 

5. Great Northern Route: Interstate 90

Running from Seattle to Boston, I-90 is the longest Interstate Highway in the country stretching for 3,020 miles. You’ll pass through the beautiful northern US states that have many great spots to stop along the way. Starting in Seattle, the route takes you across Lake Washington, through Snoqualmie, and on to the Cascade Mountains. 

The interstate crosses through 14 states including Idaho, Wyoming, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. It provides a wide variety of diverse landscapes to see and explore from towering mountains, enormous lakes, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.  There are also numerous side trips you can take including to spots like Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Badlands National Park
